Leadership and Human Resources Workshop
Presented by Dorothy Dowling and Michelle Jenson Session

This is a full day in-person workshop built for both emerging and mature leaders. It focuses on people leadership, retention and recruitment challenges, setting leadership intentions, building a strong workplace culture, communication, and personal influence and storytelling skills and tools all leaders need in their people leadership and overall leadership journey.  This 7-hour forum will be led by Dorothy Dowling and her business partner Michelle Jensen Session with a combination of speaker led sessions, case studies, and individual exercises to inspire, teach and foster a successful people leadership journey. Leadership is about followership—developing key people leadership skills post covid is critical in driving meaningful success with your teammates, your reporting relationships, and creating positive customer experiences, and driving and supporting successful business outcomes.   

This course is recognized as one of the CMI courses required under the Certification Program, based on the successful completion of the test at the end of the course.

Speaker Information

      Dorothy Dowling 

Dorothy Dowling is an experienced public company board director and C-Suite executive serving as CMO and Sr. VP of Sales. She has senior leadership experience in the hospitality, franchise, and storage industries and today as an independent consultant helps support hospitality industry clients with go-to-market strategies to help grow scale, revenue, and profitability with services ranging from repositioning to commercial business planning and activation.  Dowling also brings her subject matter expertise and personal passion regarding advocacy for women and other underrepresented groups.

Dowling has over 40 years of hospitality industry experience, most recently having spent the last 18 years as Global Chief Marketing Officer of Best Western where she directed all marketing and commercial strategies including loyalty, digital transformation, advertising, public relations, consumer, distribution and intermediary partnerships and the global sales organization.  Dowling’s experience of four decades of leadership spans the private, public, and non-profit sectors.

Dowling is a dual citizen of both Canada and the United States and has supported and developed commercial activities around the globe.  Throughout her journey, Dowling has always been a student of the game learning from subject matter experts wherever she has traveled to ensure she can bring optimum solutions that drive performance for partners and customers for both domestic and global activation opportunities.

Dowling serves as a board member and advisor for several organizations, including DEI Advisors, HSMAI, Stay Boutique, Commit Advertising Agency and WINiT by GBTA.  She also serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for CubeSmart, a real estate investment trust and the third largest owner and operator of self-storage properties across the United States.  In her role as a public trustee, she also chairs the Compensation Committee and sits on the Governance Committee.

Dowling was recently honored with Lifetime Achievement awards from the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI) for her extraordinary commercial leadership, the NYU International Hospitality Industry Investment Conference for her innovation and business performance, and GBTA WINiT for her trailblazing and leadership work advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in our industry. She was recognized in August 2022 as one of the top 100 Global Hospitality executives for her business acumen and ability to drive revenue, grow scale and improve business valuations. Dowling’s personal mantra is “relationships are the currency of life” and she has made lifelong investments in people and our industry.

Dowling holds an Honours BA and an MA from the University of Waterloo in Canada, has completed executive education at both Harvard and MIT and has recently completed post graduate D&I and ESG certifications through Cornell.


     Michelle Jenson Session

Michelle is a 15-year veteran of the hospitality industry with experience in human resources, staff and organizational development, diversity and inclusion, sustainability,  strategic planning, and investor and banking relations.​

Michelle spent the last decade as the principal in charge of operations and strategy for Kensington Investment Group, which holds a mix of commercial and hotel properties.  Prior to Kensington, she was the Equal Opportunity Compliance Specialist for UC San Diego, where she helped develop a high-profile management-level diversity education program for faculty and administrative leaders called “The Culturally Competent Management Program” and served as the staff co-chair for the Chancellor’s Advisory Council on the Status of Women.  She was also a trainer for the Staff Education & Development department leading courses on diversity, leadership, and career development and growth.​

Michelle holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Environmental Studies and a minor in Global Peace & Security from the University of California Santa Barbara. She was recognized as a Diversity Champion by UC San Diego and has held a number of leadership positions in various committees and volunteer organizations throughout her career.
