Welcome to the Canadian Business Management Institute (BMI) – General Manager/Chief Operating Officer


Unfortunately, we are starting the new year with a rise in COVID-19 cases, and a return to government restrictions. Ontario has imposed measures that include no indoor meetings or events. As such, we are not holding the BMI course in person. We are moving ahead with the course, in a virtual format. The dates remain the same – January 24-28 – but the times have changed to serve our members across time zones in Canada. The revised program-at-a-glance is available. The pre-course webinar, on Thursday January 20, is mandatory, and will allow us to maximize your learning and networking opportunity. Case study groups will be assigned during this meeting, and groups are encouraged to connect as early and as often as they choose!

Course content introduces and expands upon the GM/COO concept. Participants will have the opportunity to network with club professionals from across Canada as we review and discuss relevant and practical issues including: crisis management, the law and club operations, marketing principles, artificial intelligence and security, communication strategies, and more.  Modelled on the CMAA BMI course of the same name, this year's BMI course will be offered from Monday to Friday with a case-study capstone assignment.    

The CSCM would like to thank the Club Management Association of America (CMAA) for providing the curriculum for the BMI GM/COO. Many thanks to the following CSCM members for their time and contributions to the organization of this BMI course: Paul Cadieux, CCM, Brian Mossop, and Bill Stepec. 

BMI courses are an important component of the journey towards the CCM designation and beyond. They also offer the opportunity to get new ideas, share experiences, and build new relationships with your fellow club managers.  Although the CCM designation may be your ultimate goal, past participants have commented that it is the journey itself that has offered the greatest value to them. We are capitalizing on the advantages of technology for your journey. 

The CSCM looks forward to an engaging BMI course. With the removal of physical distancing, we are pleased to be able to open the program by another 10 spaces. Registration is available until Friday, January 14 at 4 pm ET, so don’t delay! We’d rather see you in person, but we welcome the opportunity to see your faces online!

Cancellations must be received, in writing, by no later than January 5, 2022. Cancellations received by this time will be refunded the workshop registration fee less a $300.00 (plus HST) administration fee. Cancellations received after January 5 cannot be refunded.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  1. Learn how to operate your club as a business and be perceived as its leader;
  2. Understand the responsibilities and characteristics of a true GM/COO;
  3. Review the competency areas required for you to achieve the success you desire.

Education credits are awarded on the basis of one credit for each 60 minutes of education time. Breaks are not included. An evaluation form must be completed and submitted in order to be eligible for the credit(s). Attendance is required for ALL sessions in order to obtain credit for BMI GM/COO.
