Director, Professional Development

Position Overview

The Director, Professional Development is to design, develop, and deliver high quality professional development to assist CSCM members be more successful. The CSCM’s education is currently delivered via national conferences, workshops, awards, webinars and a quarterly magazine.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director will be supported by a Coordinator, Professional Development, as well as external training providers. This role is best suited to a hands-on strategic thinker, willing to manage the detail while striving to better the value offered to members of CSCM. This includes, but is not limited to, the coordination of all aspects of planning and executing national events and conferences in conjunction with Branch planning committees. The Director is responsible for engaging with stakeholders and ensuring that all education programs are executed efficiently, on time, and within established budgets.

As the second senior manager in the CSCM National Office this individual will also be responsible for working on special projects, as requested by the Chief Executive Officer, and should be proficient at delivering presentations; preparing budgets; managing committee meetings and supervising staff. From time to time the Chief Executive Officer may request the Director to attend meetings or events on their behalf to represent the Society.


Professional Development/Certification
•Lead the development and delivery of education events and programs for the Society to include: annual National Conference; annual Food & Beverage Management Conference; Governance Workshop; Business Management Institute (BMI) Workshop
• Work with committees to develop premium and innovative programming for conferences and events including speakers, topics, timing, etc.
• Develop relationships with external trainers, product specialists and subject matter experts, and secure their services for CSCM when required for webinars, podcasts, web-based modules and conferences
• Manage the development of promotional materials for the CSCM education events
• Manage and work with appropriate internal and external staff to evaluate all events, ensuring continual improvement and quality customer service
• Ensure the Membership database is up-to-date with current, accurate and relevant certification data
• Lead, coach and motivate the Coordinator, Professional Development
Lead the annual awards process in conjunction with the Awards Committee ensuring to garner additional interest year-over-year in awards such as club of the year, general manager of the year, amongst others
Prepare financial forecasts and monitor performance against monthly and annual objectives to ensure goals are realized
• Works with the CEO to create board agendas. Contributes to and compiles board reports, annual reports and participates in board meetings when appropriate
• Works with the CEO to manage the Society operations
• Ensures appropriate systems and procedures are maintained for efficiency in all CSCM administrative and operational matters
Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional associations
• Contributes to CSCM’s Club Manager Quarterly Magazine, the Society’s professional journal, working with the Coordinator, Professional Development to highlight the 11 competencies of the CCM qualification
• Work with the Chief Executive Officer on special projects as required
Post-secondary degree/diploma is required
• Minimum five years’ experience working with a professional association and/or related position
• Minimum ten years’ experience in conference planning and managing complex projects
• Significant experience in developing high impact educational events with a demonstrated ability in applying adult learning methodologies
• Ability to prioritize and execute initiatives in a fast-moving environment
• Previous experience with forecasting and creating/managing budgets is required
• Excellent interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), relationship building, negotiating and presentation skills are required

• Strong people management and leadership skills are required
• Top-notch project management skills, including planning, implementation and evaluation
• Excellent marketing and communications skills (written and oral)
• Customer/Member service focused
• Creative and entrepreneurial with the ability to adapt to change proactively and positively
• Strong computer skills
• Self-motivated with ability to work in a team environment with internal and external partners
• Bilingual in English and French is considered an asset
• Volunteer management and/or not-for profit work experience considered an asset
• CAE or CMP designation desirable
• Flexibility to work outside of standard business hours (early mornings, evenings and weekends)
• Understanding of the hospitality and/or club management industry desirable
